Environmental Features
Ribera del Duero has a continental climate characterized by extremely cold winters, hot summers, and significant temperature differences between day and night, providing excellent conditions for grape maturation:
Climate: It belongs to an extreme continental climate, with summer highs reaching 40°C and winter lows approaching freezing. The large day-night temperature difference helps accumulate acidity and aromatic compounds in the grapes.
Soil: Altitudes range between 720 to 1,000 meters, with diverse soils including clay, sandy soils, limestone, and schist. The calcareous soils impart elegance and complexity to the wines, while the clay provides structure and intense flavors.
Production Data: According to the latest data, there are over 300 wineries in the Ribera del Duero region, producing over 90 million bottles of wine annually, with more than 95% being red wines, renowned for their rich flavors and aging potential.
Main Grape Varieties:
1. Tempranillo
Description: Its name derives from the Spanish word “temprano,” meaning “early,” accounting for 95% of the area’s planted acreage. It is the core variety of Ribera del Duero, well adapted to the local extreme climate with its thick skin and early ripening traits. It matures fully in a short growing season and performs excellently in high-altitude environments. Compared to other regions, the Tempranillo grapes here are smaller with thicker skins, giving the wines rich color and robust structure.
Tasting Notes: Exhibits aromas of dark fruits like blackberry, black cherry, and plum, along with vanilla, tobacco, and leather notes from oak aging. The tannins are firm, and the acidity is balanced, making it suitable for long-term aging. Over time, the wines develop flavors of dried fruits, spices, and minerals.
