Geographic Location

Abruzzo is located in central Italy, on the eastern side of the Adriatic Sea. The region is surrounded by magnificent mountains and vast ocean views, making it a favorable area for wine production. To the south, Abruzzo borders Molise; to the west, it adjoins Lazio; and to the north, it faces Marche. 1.  Montepulciano

  • Description: Montepulciano is the second most widely planted grape variety in Italy after Sangiovese, and it is the most important red grape variety in Abruzzo, occupying most of the red grape cultivation area in the region.

3.  Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso

4.   Pecorino

  • Description: Don’t get confused! This is not cheese; it comes from the Italian word "pecora," meaning sheep. This is because this variety has historically been closely associated with grazing sheep, which love to eat these grapes. Pecorino is a unique grape variety found in the Marche and Abruzzo regions of Italy's east coast.

  • Tasting Notes: Typically exhibits fresh fruit aromas, such as lemon, green apple, peach, and floral notes. Medium to full-bodied with high acidity and good structure, having mineral flavors that provide a fresh and lively mouthfeel.

1. Cantina Tollo Montepulciano d’Abruzzo  

  • Main grape variety: Montepulciano

  • Tasting characteristics: Intense fruity aromas with notes of ripe berries, black cherries, and spices. The wine has a deep color, soft tannins, and a round mouthfeel with a solid structure, making it very suitable for long-term aging.

  • Winemaking process: The grapes are hand-harvested in mid-October and then fermented in stainless steel tanks, usually controlled at 26-28°C to preserve the fruity aromas. The wine is aged in oak barrels for about 6 months to enhance its structure and complexity.

  • Historical background: Cantina Tollo was established in the 1960s and is the largest cooperative winery in the Abruzzo region, dedicated to producing high-quality wines and has gained an excellent reputation in the international market. The winery won the prestigious title of 'Cellar of the Year' in the 2007 Italian wine guide 'Gambero Rosso'!

2.  Masciarelli Trebbiano d’Abruzzo

  • Main grape variety: Trebbiano 

  • Tasting characteristics: With elegant notes of citrus, peach, and floral aromas, it has a bright acidity, a light body, and a long aftertaste, making it perfect for pairing with light meals and appetizers.

  • Winemaking process: Fermented at low temperatures in stainless steel tanks to preserve freshness and fruity aromas. The wine is usually not aged for long but is kept fresh in stainless steel tanks. 

  • Historical background: The Masciarelli winery was founded in 1978 by Gianni Masciarelli, focusing on producing high-quality Abruzzo wines. The winery is known for its combination of traditional techniques and modern winemaking methods.

3.  Valentini Pecorino

  • Main grape variety: Pecorino

  • Tasting characteristics: Distinct personality with complex layers of almond, pear, and floral notes. The wine is full-bodied with a good structure and moderate acidity, making it very versatile for food pairing.

  • Winemaking process: Fermented at low temperatures in stainless steel tanks to preserve freshness and fruity aromas. Some high-quality versions may be aged in oak barrels to enhance complexity of flavors.

  • Historical background: The Valentini winery was founded in the 1950s by Edoardo Valentini, who is regarded as one of the most influential winemakers in the Abruzzo region. Valentini Pecorino has been served at royal banquets in Italy, and its combination of long-standing tradition and modern winemaking techniques has made it one of today's popular white wines.

4.  Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo

  • Main grape variety: Montepulciano

  • Tasting characteristics: Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo is a bright rosé (pink wine) certified as DOC, with a color like ripe cherries, a refreshing taste, and abundant fruity aromas. Common aromas include strawberry, cherry, and almond, with a soft and lasting finish.

  • Winemaking process: During the winemaking process, the grapes are typically soaked for about 8 to 10 hours to extract color and aroma. This process gives the wine a delicate pink color. Most Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo is kept fresh in stainless steel tanks without long aging.

  • Historical background: The name Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo comes from the Italian word 'Ciliegia' (cherry), describing its bright and translucent red color. Since it received DOC status in 1968, this wine has been widely loved and is one of the most popular rosés in the area.
